It's very easy to lose hope with all the corruption and blind patriotism these days. Police are necessary...And there's the problem. Police are necessary; a society without them could not function, not in the real world. Every large system involves some degree of injustice, therefore any individual who participates in almost any organized activity has accepted some form of injustice. "Some laws are unjust" does not equate to "there are no good cops." Some people who are basically good become police because they believe the good they can do outweighs the bad they may be required to do; or because they don't agree with Higgs about how bad the unjust laws are. Reality doesn't follow simplistic, mechanical syllogisms.

I don't know whether the percentage of bad cops is higher than the percentage of bad accountants or bad mechanics or whatever (I suspect it may be, because power attracts bad people). Bad cops are more of a problem than bad people in other jobs, because of the power they hold. Since we can't do without police, we need to purge out the bad ones. As you point out, that takes hard work.Infidel753https://www.blogger.com/profile/10965786814334886696noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-329507352453931374.post-20970108974157712112019-06-20T07:55:22.181-04:002019-06-20T07:55:22.181-04:00Not that I wouldn't mind seeing one when I'...Not that I wouldn't mind seeing one when I'm being robbed...bluzdudehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05991272670722362652noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-329507352453931374.post-14758874370201239322019-06-19T18:54:59.241-04:002019-06-19T18:54:59.241-04:00"The whole good cop/bad cop question can be d..."The whole good cop/bad cop question can be disposed of much more decisively. We need not enumerate what proportion of cops appears to be good or listen to someone's anecdote about his Uncle Charlie, an allegedly good cop. We need only consider the following: (1) a cop's job is to enforce the laws, all of them; (2) many of the laws are manifestly unjust, and some are even cruel and wicked; (3) therefore every cop has agreed to act as an enforcer for laws that are manifestly unjust or even cruel and wicked. There are no good cops." ~Robert Higgs
Edhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14658730069022837576noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-329507352453931374.post-8058346228335727912019-06-19T18:47:35.971-04:002019-06-19T18:47:35.971-04:00That's a huge point. One bad apple spoils the bunch unless the apple is removed. 'The thin blue line' mentality is one of several memetic sets that need to be extensively revised to reform the police. (Viewing themselves as an occupying power rather than members of the commmunity is another one. Closely related is the idea that modeling their behavior on the military is appropriate.)Larry Lennhoffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06578073969473815180noreply@blogger.com
